Tech Talks with Cathy Simpson

The digital economy is becoming increasingly important in every corner of the world. The Canadian Atlantic provinces are an ideal springboard for this: digital technology firms in Atlantic Canada generated $6.1 billion in revenues in 2017. Yet, very few outside of these provinces know about this.

Enter Tech Talks with Cathy Simpson: a new podcast exploring this new reality, opportunities, and a look at the future. Cathy Simpson, the host, explores opportunities for development, engages local digital firms to recount their experiences, and contributes to an objective view of digital growth in the Atlantic provinces.

Full disclosure: I have contributed to this podcast and plan to continue to do so in the future.

Here is the link to the podcast. I hope you will find it as interesting and engaging as I did.

A Passion for Pizza

I love pizza. Most likely, so do you. But what exactly is pizza? I have enjoyed hundreds of different styles, but our family’s favourite has always been Neapolitan pizza. Neapolitan pizza requires an oven temperature higher than most home ovens can achieve, which means that we cannot enjoy our favourite pizza easily, or often.

Enter the RoccBox: a portable outdoor oven that recreates the high temperatures of a traditional wood and brick oven, in a much smaller and more manageable form factor. I bought one in late Spring as an early birthday present and we have enjoyed amazing pizzas ever since. The RoccBox can cook Neapolitan-style pizzas, but of course we can also make thin crust pizzas, New York-style pizzas, Naan bread, and many other dishes including roasted vegetables and perfectly charred steaks.

In a few months, we will have to stop cooking outdoors: no more pizzas for a while. For now, however, I’ll continue to keep my tomato sauce handy…

The RoccBox is produced by Gozney and is available in many countries. The links I include lead directly to Gozney’s website. I should add that there is a competing brand (Ooni) that manufactures a range of similar pizza ovens and that although I have not used any of them, the reviews seem good too. There are also local brands that I have no access to, like Pizza Party or Effeuno Garatron.

Delight: WonderBoom 2

Just like in the Ultimate Ears website…

My favourite time for podcasts is in the morning. I listen to them while I get ready for the day, and during my commute to work. These days, I have a very short commute to work: my home office is two rooms away. That leaves the morning routine. I love this WonderBoom 2 speaker because it has a good amount of clarity for podcasts and music, it gets loud enough that I can listen in the shower or while I am shaving, and it is waterproof so I can take it with me. I have changed many different Bluetooth speakers, until I found this one. A true delight.

The producer’s website, Ultimate Ears, is as follows: https://www.ultimateears.com/en-ca/wireless-speakers/wonderboom-2.html

Delights

From time to time, I will post some thoughts on something I find truly useful, well designed, or simply delightful. These will be my opinions only: if I enjoy something, it is because it fits my life, which is the only life I feel even mildly qualified to write about. Thus, if I post links, they will be direct links to the manufacturer. I will not post affiliate links. I’ll just provide my view, for what it’s worth.

The required first post

Hello everyone! For a while now I’ve wanted to update my old website, and now here we are. I hope to be able to post regularly. This is my personal blog, which means that I will not usually talk much about my work. When I do, however, the opinions I will put in this blog will be my own and not my employer’s. So, when I say I love the UNB, you know it is just what I think!
